Great night down East Neuk as the Fence Collective held the Flamin Hott Loggz festival, with a fantastic line-up that included the usual Fence favourites (Pictish Trail, King Creosote, James Yorkston, and the Shivers, unfortunatly I missed most of the early acts, but I made it to the torch procession from Anstruther to Cellardyke for the musical bonfire in the early evening, then went on to a party 'til the wee hours back in Anstruther.The highlight for me was seeing my old friend Pete MacLeod, bass player with King Creosote doing his stuff,took me back all those years when we used sit about in the wash room of his mums house, trying to make music,we thought we sounded good, but in reality it was only Pete that was any good.I have very fond memories of the two of us heading to the Cupar camera club after the pubs would close, to start all night printing sessions in the dark room, fuelled by lots of free coffee and John Peel mix tapes, emerging from the dark room at 5am slightly mad.
So it seems like I was going back to where it all started, as the first band I ever photographed was kenny's Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra in the Vic bar St Andrews many years ago,on my first camera a Pentax film number.Going to have to make back up to Fife sooner than later.

MF Doom Live at the Glasgow Arches

Daniel Dumile or is it DOOM, King Geedorah, Metal Face, Metal Fingers, Mighty Farts, these are but some of the stage names of this legendary rapper, Hip Hop producer. Last night in Glasgow he was droping lyrics all over a rapt crowd in a tightly packed Arches, this is Doom's second visit to Scotland, lets hope we see a lot more of him in the future.

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood have joined forces with acclaimed hip hop artist MF DOOM for a compilation album, Complex, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Lex Records. With tricked out beats, DOOM's cool raps, and samples from Greenwood's spare "There Will Be Blood" soundtrack (h/t At Ease via Prefix), "Retarded Fren" is a slick production DOOM's lyrics move fluidly along like mental molases for the brain.

Folk legend Bert Jansch dies aged 67

Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch, a founding member of the band Pentangle and a well-known guitarist solo artist has died at the age of 67.

Jansch, who had cancer, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at a hospice in Hampstead, north London.
Born in Glasgow in 1943, the musician recorded his first album in 1965 and his last, The Black Swan, in 2006.
Between 1967 and 1973 he was part of acoustic group Pentangle, best known for their 1970 hit single Light Flight.
John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox were the other original members of the band, whose albums included Basket of Light and Solomon's Seal.
The group reformed in 2008 after receiving a lifetime achievement honour the previous year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
As a solo artist, Jansch received his own lifetime achievement accolade at the same event in 2001.
He last performed, in Scotland in 2008 at the Royal concert hall.

The Stranglers play the 02 Academy in Glasgow.
Spanning five decades, the Stranglers are the longest-surviving and most "continuously successful" band to have originated in the UK punk scene of the mid to late 1970s. Beginning life as the Guildford Stranglers on 11 September 1974 in Guildford, Surrey,[1] they originally built a following within the mid-'70s pub rock scene. While their aggressive, no-compromise attitude identified them as one of the instigators of the UK punk rock scene that followed, their idiosyncratic approach rarely followed any single musical genre and the group went on to explore a variety of musical styles, from new wave, art rock and gothic rock through to the sophisticated pop of some of their 1980s output.

They had major mainstream success with their single "Golden Brown". Their other hits include "No More Heroes", "Peaches", "Always the Sun", "Skin Deep" as well as many other groundbreaking and popular songs.

The Stranglers' early sound was driven by Jean-Jacques Burnel's pulsating bass, but also proudly gave prominence to Dave Greenfield's keyboards at a time when the instrument was seen as unfashionable. Their early music was also characterised by the growling vocals and sometimes misanthropic lyrics of both Jean-Jacques Burnel and Hugh Cornwell. Over time, their output gradually grew more refined and sophisticated. Summing up their contribution to popular music, critic Dave Thompson would later write: "From bad-mannered yobs to purveyors of supreme pop delicacies, the group was responsible for music that may have been ugly and might have been crude - but it was never, ever boring

Ry Cooder and the The Chieftains

Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow commemorated Mexico’s Fighting Irish with a world premiere collaboration between The Chieftains — pioneers of Irish folk music — and the legendary American guitarist Ry Cooder. The concert celebrated the near-forgotten story of the San Patricio Battalion — a band of more than 800 Irish-American immigrants who deserted the United States Army to join the Mexican side during the US-Mexican War of 1846–1848. The Chieftains held the stage, ably assisted by Mexican roots revivalists Los Cenzontles, world champion Irish dancer Cara Butler and some beautiful and mesmerising Mexican folk dancers. Special guest Ry Cooder appeared mid-set to set the evening alight. His guitarwork, along with his singing of The Sands of Mexico, was stunning. But the best was served for last, the rendition Goodnight Irene capped a very special evening.

Dance singer, remixer and all-round whizz-kid Vincent Frank creates high-energy robopop in which fast neon beats jump out of '80s-tinged tunes.

Frank has remixed tracks for the likes of Mika, Radiohead and CSS. His debut album, Complete Me, has been co-produced by Stuart Price, who has worked with The Killers, Madonna and Keane.
Vincent Frank (born Vincent Roberto Turner on 9 October 1985 in Thornton Heath, Croydon) known professionally as Frankmusik, is a British electropop musician. The name 'Frank' is derived from the surname of his grandfather, whom he took the name of as a tribute.

Green Day take to the stage at Glasgow's SEEC, Billie Joe Armstrong hits the stage running, I dont understand how this band get classed as a punk band, there about as punk as a middle class skater boy high on redbull, still the kids loved the show, and they dont disapoint, plenty of energy, and they know how to work the crowd, great for pictures,way better than some whining indie shoegazers that like to play in the dark.

So here is last nights pics of the Editors gig at the mighty Glasgow Barrowlands Ballroom, Still the best venue in Glasgow by a mile, It reminds me that I need to carry on with my documentry project on the Barras, before the corprate sponsored venues, kill it off for good.

Editors lead singer Tom Smith did his usual of hiding behind the mic at every every conceivable momment, and I am gona moan about the lighting being shit once again, got a few photos, but they are pretty rubbish.

First time I have seen this band live, they were going for it tonight, it's a shame they were playing the ABC, I dont rate it much as a venue, it never seems to get jumping, and in terms of photohraphing bands it's a nightmare. crapy LED lights, and the bands are always backlit. Check this guy's new project called We're All Gonna Die- 100 Meters of Existence.Simon Hoegsberg new project where he shot people (with a camera) from a bridge in Berlin over 20 days and then collaged it all together into one 100 metre piece. That’s one massive rolling panoramic take on Berliners on a bridge.! He has some other great projects on his site as well, one called The Tower of Babel, which he states as being unfinished.

Magnum Photo's Paolo Pellegrin was asked to shoot a series of Images of the worlds top movie stars for the New York Times, more accustomed to photographing in war zones and other harsh environments such as Darfur and Cambodia, here you can see his unique reportage style take on Hollywood glamour in this multimedia piece. You can see all eight of the big named stars Paolo shot,I especially love the set on Robert Downey, Jr such a fantastic portrait.
Paolo Pellegrin was born in 1964 in Rome. He became a Magnum Photos nominee in 2001 and a full member in 2005. He is a contract photographer for Newsweek magazine. Pellegrin is winner of many awards, including eight World Press Photo awards.

TWAT OF THE WEEK

Here we see Kanye West and his band of merry little helpers outside the men's Comme Des Garcon show. What might you ask does this lot of psychedelic hangers on actually do, apart from carry around Kanye's Ego around in his louis vuitton suitcase. It reminds me of the pictures you see of the President surrounded by his close protection security,and the guy who carries the Nuke launch codes around in the black suitcase. I think in Kanye's case all there protecting is his pack lunch, and some emergency clean underwear. Obama might want to take a leaf outa Kanye's book and Jazz up his entourage for those trips to Moscow.
